Lunch seminar: Entrepreneurial opportunity creation as an acculturation process

Research profile seminar

Lunch seminar at Gothenburg Research Institute. (Microwaves for heating lunch available)
Quang Evansluong, Marcela Ramirez Pasillas & Huong Bergström - Entrepreneurial opportunity creation as an acculturation process This paper conducts an inductive case study to further understand how the acculturation and opportunity creation processes influence each other. The study rests on four cases of immigrant entrepreneurs of Cameroonian, Lebanese, Mexican and Assyrian origins who founded their businesses in Sweden

This study bridges the gap between acculturation theory and immigrant entrepreneurship literature. It develops a model of opportunity creation as an acculturation process which includes three on-going and iterative sub-processes: (I) the trigger process: being marginalized triggers immigrants to become entrepreneurs; (II) the development process: developing entrepreneurial ideas through ethnic commodification; and (III) refining entrepreneurial ideas through local integration. The findings indicate that the acculturation process evolves while immigrants develop entrepreneurial ideas for their ethnic peers and local customers. It highlights how aspects of acculturation such as being isolated, relying on ethnic bonding and place attachment influence the opportunity creation and acculturation processes.
