Design as collaborative world making - Aesthetic inquiry and expertise in creative work

We would like to present a paper (work in progress) with the working title "Design as collaborative world making - Aesthetic inquiry and expertise in creative work", by Anna Rylander Eklund , Ariana Amacker and Ulises Navarro Aguiar, at Gothenburg Research Institute.

In the 21st century we have seen a wave of interest in designers¿ contribution to the innovation process, reflected in the popularity of concepts such as design thinking and service design. The basic premise is that designers¿ creative and open mind-set, or attitude, and experimental human-centered ways of working, can be emulated by business people and packaged into processes and tools appropriate in business setting to solve any kind of complex problem.
Yet, we argue, when packed into predefined processes and tools, detached from artistic practice, and reduced to theoretical concepts such as aesthetic knowledge, adapted to fit academic formats, the potentially radical contribution of design work is lost.

In this seminar we will present our theoretical framework on design as collaborative world making. Departing from John Dewey¿s theories on inquiry and aesthetic experience, and drawing on empirical studies of design work, we seek to develop a new terminology that better reflects the artistic mindset and practices of design work.
